ASAP stands for Autistic Self-Advocacy Project. Conceived by Wilderwood, the project was generously funded by a NEXT for Autism: Color the Spectrum grant and a Meta Community Action grant.
ASAP was conceived as a way to help make the day-to-day lives of neurodivergent people a bit easier. Although there are other online resources that link to services to assist autistic and neurodivergent people, they are often designed for children. They also tend not to take into account the fact that autistic and neurodivergent adults have businesses, need personal and professional services, and finding an autistic-friendly place that can help with an ordinary task of living and thriving can make all the difference.
The resources listed here are not 100% autistic-perfect. There’s likely no such thing, and the world is certainly not that way, either. There may, however, be aspects of a business or a service that can make a difference, even a small one, to the experience autistic people have in a world fundamentally not made for them. And that’s the goal of this directory.
Wilderwood has developed a template/protocol for other nonprofits to follow in order to create their own local, grassroots ASAP programs. It’s hoped that ASAPs will spring up across the country and provide opportunity for customized, local, real resources that are autistic and ND friendly, and can make life a bit easier for those of us in the community who are neurodivergent.
