Balance Speech and Behavior seeks to provide specialized and individualized support with an emphasis on helping the individual achieve a greater quality of life across all settings.
While there is controversy in the autistic community about ABA therapy, our Scouts found that Balance Speech and Behavior has several distinct differences. One of the differences is that Melisa Santacroce is a dual SLP and BCBA, combining elements of both approaches in the way she interacts with autistic people. One of the most valuable differences is the willingness of staff to work with autistic adults to expand into the community.
From the webpage:
“In the past year alone, our RBTs have been to homes, community centers, shopping centers, schools (both public and private), food banks, and even colleges. We have assisted teens and adults find and benefit from volunteer opportunities in the community. We have attended cooking classes, ridden on public transportation, assisted with adaptive sports, learned to groom horses and care for gardens, swam and exercised, planned special events and made purchases with clients. The learning environment is all around you, and our staff will help you access it and thrive!”
It is this element in particular — of actively supporting more involvement with the broader community — that was mentioned specifically by Scouts for inclusion in ASAP. Many times autistic people find it difficult to have the transport or other support to access these community opportunities, and Melisa and her team can assist with that.
